The Investment Tax Credit (“ITC”) is a 30 percent federal tax credit for solar systems on residential (under Section 25D) and commercial (under section 48) properties. In addition, individual states may offer a variety of incentives for installing solar or energy efficiency upgrades. The North Caroline Clean Energy Technology Center maintains a database of state incentives. You can access the database here: NC Clean Energy DSIREUSA.ORG

How can solar panels on my house make money?

What is Net Metering?

When the sun is shining and you are generating power an excess which is not used by your home goes to the grid in effect “spinning your meter backwards.” This results in a credit on your electric bill. When your house requires more electric that you are making, for instance at night when the sun has gone to bed for the night, you will use those credits before purchasing any power from your utility company.

According to Wikipedia as of 2015, 43 states have adopted net metering. In 3 of the remaining states utilities have adopted net metering.

Big Utilities Threaten Net Metering Incentives for Homeowners

Is Your State At Risk?

The big utility monopolies are threatened by homeowners who wish to generate their own electricity. Many are working to change the net metering laws in several states including Michigan, North Carolina, and Arizona. For instance, in Michigan Senate Bill 438 proposes the utilites will "purchase" a home owner's excess power at wholesale rates, around 0.02, then sell it back to the homeowner at retail rates. In Michigan's Lower Peninsula, this rate is around 0.11, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula the rate is around 0.22. Think of it as growing your food and being forced to sell it to the grocery store at wholesale prices and then being forced to buy the food back to feed your family at retail rates. Imagine...the powerful utilities being threatened by the average homeowner.

New technologies like Tesla’s Powerwall are being piloted in homes throughout the U. S. The Powerwall will give the home generator the ability to have a grid tied system and store excess power rather than making the investment in solar and giving the power to the electric utility. Your Simply Solar PV kit will make your house Powerwall ready.

Simply Solar PV recommends you check the net metering legislation in your state. NC Clean Energy Technology Center maintains a database of state incentives at
